Why does most leadership development not stick?
Leadership development is the deliberate building of the capabilities a strategy requires of its leaders. Done well it is a system — diagnosis, sequenced journeys, coaching and measurement — not a calendar of programmes.
Why it matters
Organisations spend heavily and repeatedly on development that does not change behaviour, because it starts from training budgets rather than measured gaps. Capability must follow strategy: development that begins with diagnosis is the difference between activity and capability.
What good practice looks like
- Begin with diagnosis — leadership development should begin with evidence of what the strategy actually needs.
- Build journeys, not events: sequenced development anchored in live business challenges.
- Reinforce transitions with coaching — the highest-stakes moments are the least supported.
- Measure against the baseline the diagnosis established.
Every transformation begins with understanding
